Equipment
Students will not be expected to provide their own equipment when they first start training, but will be encouraged to and may find it more convenient to get their own safety equipment if they become regular participants.
The list below of equipment needed for different levels of training will give an indication what regular students will want to purchase as a priority.
Protective Equipment
Masks and gloves are provided by the school, but students are encouraged to purchase their own fencing mask and gloves after a sensible length of time.
We will only allow sparring with Nylon weapons to take place when students have a minimum of Mask and padded gloves,
For sparring with steel, additional extra protection must be worn. This would include a padded jack or gambeson, more protective gloves or gauntlets and obviously using a suitable practice weapon as approved by the school.
Fencing masks, jackets & Chest protectors
There are many excellent providers of equipment and some not so great its always worth speaking to an instructor and asking around on Facebook before spending. Chest protectors come in both male and female and are strongly recommended for any female (or male for that matter) student wishing to take part in free play.
E-bay Pieces of equipment such as masks and chest protectors, can often be sourced on ebay - it's worth a look!
Forearm guards
Forearms guards - can be bought from many martial arts outlets.
Groin protectors
While not enforced you only forget it the once- these can be bought in various forms, from martial arts types, to a simple cricket box from a sports shop.
Shin & knee guards
Optional equipment in nylon sparring, but essential in steel sparring. Very useful in one-handed sword styles, such as sword and buckler.
Throat guard (Gourget)
These are essential for steel weapon sparring. There are various types available if in doubt please ask for advice from your instructor prior to purchasing.
Nylon Sparring Swords
These are used extensively for beginner drilling and sparring. A number of these in single-handed and hand-and-a-half versions are available from the club to begin with. More advanced students use these as well as steel weapons. They are available from the The Knight Shop. As well as a number of other suppliers.
Steel Swords
They are a number of suppliers here in the UK and abroad, but please check with the instructor which types are deemed suitable and safe.
